In women´s race Katharina Rumpus (GER) wins for the third time in a row – suspense till the last moment in both races – Inline speed skating at its best
Ostrava, 16th June 2018, The Grand Slam of Inline skating saw today its fourth of six legs. Ostrava, the Czech Sports City, witnessed great elite races of 33,5 Kilometres which were accompanied by an extended inline skating programme featuring several kids´ and leisure races as well as free skating on the WIC course with more than 1500 skaters overall. All participants and spectators too enjoyed the sunshine and warm temperatures, perfect weather conditions for speed inline skating on the road.
Decision in the men's race only on the finish line
After four of eleven laps, or 13 kilometres, Marthijn Mulder (NED) broke away and had after three more laps an advantage of 27 seconds on Eugenio Landete (ESP) and Jakob Ulreich (AUT). But two laps later the gap was closed, and the three skaters raced against each other, sprinted 300 meters towards the finish line where they arrived together,r so the referees identified the winner only by consulting foto finish images. Marthijn Mulder commented "This was a really difficult and extremely close race. I am extremely happy, that having broken away initially, I was able to decide the sprint in my favour and as I have for the first time won a race of the WORLD INLINE CUP!".
Women's race decided in sprint
Several attempts to break away failed and the entire elite pack stayed together. The race was decided on the finish line in a sprint on the last 100 metres. Katharina Rumpus from Germany was able to decide the sprint and defended her third victory in Ostrava after 2016 and 2017 too. The victorious Rumpus stated, "Both the weather and the course were perfect today, but it is a very demanding course, so it was very tough! I am very satisfied that I could win here again and to gather points for the WORLD INLINE CUP overall ranking before the next race in Harbin, China!".
